Why I Won't Go Gluten-Free

I've heard incredible stories of spoonies becoming practically symptom-free thanks to their new gluten-free diets. Whether they're embellishing or not, both research and anecdotal evidence do show that there's something to the gluten-free craze. However, I'm not joining the bandwagon. Here's why:

1. It's not a sure thing. There's no such thing as a sure thing in treatment for chronic illnesses, but... Cutting out gluten and waiting months, or even a year, to see if it's helped at all is not for me. I'd rather continuing exercising and eating healthy when I can, practicing self care and taking my medications. That's the closest there is to a sure thing for a spoonie.

2. I don't have the strength. Gluten-free eating takes careful planning, grocery shopping and cooking or baking. You can't just buy a frozen pizza or pick up a sandwich at the cafe down the street; you have to diligently read the ingredients to be sure no gluten is lurking in your food. Eating out, even in a metropolis like Toronto or New York is difficult. And all your go-to recipes need to be altered. That is, if you have the spoons to cook in the first place.

3. It's expensive. If you don't have the strength to prepare your own gluten-free meals (see #2), you're stuck eating out at one of a handful of celiac-friendly eateries or paying an arm and a leg for prepared foods sans gluten. Many spoonies, including myself, aren't able to work as much as they'd like, and don't have the funds to keep up this lifestyle.

4. It's triggering. As someone who's had an eating disorder, I find cutting anything out of my diet incredibly difficult (emotionally). I can't help but be dragged back to that place in my mind where I think, "if I'm cutting out gluten, maybe I'll lose weight! Maybe I should cut out dessert too! And this and this and this! And then I won't be fat anymore, people will accept that I'm not lazy; they'll realize I really do have a legitimate illness. I'll finally be thin and acceptable to society". And then I can't get out of that head space. Do I really want to risk it, for a chance that I won't be as tired or sore? No. My mental health is just as important as my physical health.

5. I have no definitive medical reason to stop eating gluten. Is the huge lifestyle change of cutting gluten from my diet worth the slight chance that my health could improve a little? Definitely not.

6. I love bread. I know this might be kind of a silly reason, especially compared to the others on this list... Besides, gluten-free bread exists. I've tried it. But it's not the same. If I had to subsist on it I could, but I absolutely love food and I'm not giving up my favourites without reason. No sad salads for me!

Are you gluten-free, or would you try a gluten-free diet?

End of Winter White & Green Soup with Cheddar Cheese Scones

March is a magical month:
Winter slowly creeps away, letting spring flowers grow, temperatures rise and the sun stay out longer. Last weekend, I spent an afternoon with my dad, and we made a delicious end of winter lunch. We think you'll like it, so here's the recipe (and more mouth-watering pictures!).

Cheddar Cheese Scones

2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour
2 tbsp granulated sugar
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
1 1/4 cups cheddar, shredded
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, lightly beaten (egg wash)

1 In a large bowl mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda,
cayenne pepper and salt.

2 Blend in butter using pastry cutter.

3 Add cheese and stir.

4 Add buttermilk and stir.

5 With floured hands, form a ball. Knead 10 times gently on a floured surface.

6 Pat out dough to 3/4" thickness and cut into rounds with a floured cutter.

7 Place rounds on an ungreased cookie sheet and lightly brush with egg wash.

8 Bake at 425• for 12-15 minutes until golden.

End of Winter Green and White Soup

8 cups water
2 bouillon cubes dissolved in boiling water or fresh vegetable stock
Potatoes, cubed
Onion, chopped
Celery, chopped
Olive oil
Spinach or rapini
Barley
1 bay leaf
Your choice of dried herbs, salt and pepper, to taste

1 Stir onions in hot olive oil until caramelized.

2  Add celery and stir.

3 Add stock, followed by hot water and bay leaf, and keep stirring.

4 Bring to a boil. Turn heat down to a simmer.

5 Add herbs, salt and pepper. Continue to let simmer for 30 minutes.

6 Add barley and let simmer until cooked.

7 Add spinach or rapini. Stir until slightly wilted.

8 Turn off heat. Serve with cheddar cheese biscuits and enjoy.

Bon appetit!

How Hobbies Can Improve Mental Health

The Ramen Girl did more for me than make me appreciate that 'real' ramen's better than instant noodles ;)

This film is about a naive but charming American girl called Abby, who travels to Japan to be with her expat boyfriend. Everything is peachy for Abby, until her boyfriend ditches her. Falling apart, she finds solace in the neighbourhood ramen house, and finally convinces the moody old chef to take her on as an apprentice.

Though Abby is a downright klutz at first, she eventually catches on to every cooking skill she is taught. Yet...

Mother: “Her broth is bland.”
Sensei: “I wonder why. She’s mastered the technique perfectly.”
Mother: “Sometimes too much technical training can get in the way. You cook with your head. Your head is full of noise. You must learn to cook from the quieter place deep inside of you. Each bowl of ramen you prepare is a gift to your customer. The food that you serve your customer becomes a part of them. It contains your spirit. That’s why your ramen must be an expression of pure love. A gift from your heart.”
Abby: “I don’t know anything about love. Every time I feel it, it’s gone. It disappears. And all I have left is pain and sadness.”
Mother: “Begin by putting your tears into your broth.”

Abby learns that, in order to both overcome the sorrow she felt when her love left her, and to perfect the art of making ramen, she must put her heart into it. There's even a science behind this!

Kelly Lambert, the neuroscientist who wrote “Lifting Depression,” asserts that…

Activity that “… produces a result you can see, feel, and touch, such as knitting a sweater or tending a garden” [and cooking!] causes physiological changes in the brain that promote a sense of well-being, and that such activity “reduces stress and anxiety and, most important, builds resilience against the onset of depression.”

The Ramen Girl teaches us that finding and working at a passion really can improve our mental health.

What is your passion?

Not Very "Smart", Huh?

Today Jezebel shared some horrible-looking diet 'food'. The pictures were enough to make me lose my appetite-- and enough to reassure me that going for yummy food regardless of my weight & having a healthy body image is far more appealing than eating what companies, dieticians and society tells me is healthy & maintaining a size that's not natural to me.

Go ahead. Gaze in the mirror & admire your gorgeous body- and then take a trip to the fridge for something delicious, like an apple or some lox on a bagel or an ice cream cone.

What To Eat for Christmas Dinner

Food is a hot topic year-round, but when the holidays approach, women begin to feel especially guilty about their food intake.

The delicious aroma of Christmas Dinner, the mouthwatering desserts on the table... It can be hard to resist. So here's my advice: Don't.

If you're calculating calories or banning dessert, how can you enjoy yourself? The holidays are supoosed to be festive and fun, not fraught with guilt and anxiety over what you eat & how you look.

Enjoy what you eat. Eat when you're hungry. Stop when you're full. And most importantly, have a wonderful time!

I've had a really amazing trip so far, so Things I Love Thursday is a perfect opportunity to discuss it!

A few little things that made me smile this week:

♥ Waking up to Kamen every morning. Bliss beyond words!!

♥ Palm trees! They make me smile every time I see one, which makes people laugh, "she's not from around here, is she?".

♥ Spoonfuls of chocolate frosting. Mmm.

♥ Seeing Beaker at Disney World! He's my favourite muppet, and Kamen knows it, so he made sure to take me to the Muppets 3D show. :)

Until next time... xox

Toronto Food Festivals (Summer 2011)

Samosas: one of many yummy foods to try at Toronto's Festival of India. Source.

In Toronto, there's always something to be excited about. We live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, as well as one of the most multicultural.

Numerous festivals take place in the GTA, many of them celebrating food. Don't pretend your stomach isn't growling at the very thought!!

Here's a taste (clever, right?!) of the very best food festivals our city has to offer this summer:

The Taste of Little Italy celebrates all things Italian, especially the cuisine. Takes place from 17th to 19th June (that's this weekend!) on College Street from Bathurst to Shaw. More information here.

Festival of India takes place on the 16th + 17th of July. It features yoga, a bazaar and a vegetarian feast. Plus, it's free. More information here.

Taste of the Danforth is delicious! Greek food and Hellenic culture are celebrated at the Danforth year-round, but this festival is the icing on the cake... Or the spinach in the spanakopita? More information here.

The Toronto Vegetarian Festival celebrates a compassionate, veg*n lifestyle and the yummy food that comes with it. 9th-11th September 2011. More information here.

I'm hungry now...

Full disclosure: I am NOT affiliated with these festivals in any way. I just happen to like food and love Toronto (:

Mason Jar Meals

This brilliant idea  makes me hungry... So I can't help but share it!

Mason Jar Meals are jars containing food stacked in layers. You can take them with you when you're on the go and mix your salad, pasta or whatever else you choose when you're ready to eat it. Meaghan of the decorated cookie says, "I wanted a meal that tasted freshly made, even after sitting for hours in a jar".

I love that this idea makes eating delicious and healthy food so simple. This dish (or should I say, jar!) especially appeals to me:

Happy Passover!

One of my favourite Passover treats! Photo by sugar-bliss gnome on Flickr.

Passover was always a warm, happy time, for me as a child, full of good food and lots of time spent with family and friends. We dressed our best, set the table and filled my Bubby's house with flowers, homemade art and yummy treats.

This year, it's just my Maman and I for Passover, and we already have some big plans (Kosher wine, matzah ball soup and a movie marathon!). I'm here to help you celebrate, whether you're new to the holiday and looking for a fun foray into Jewish traditions, a seasoned celebrant or somewhere in-between.

What is matzah? and Why is it customary to eat matzah on Passover?

Vegetarian Times offers some yummy ideas for your seder.

A yummy, Pesach-friendly, fruit-filled cake from Canadian Living.

This is a very creative use for matzah!

More matzah! This time, it's Chocolate Toffee Matzo Crack. Sounds so good that I will definitely be making a batch sometime this week.

I loved the description of a seder in this article from College Candy.

How are you celebrating Passover this year?
