Fantastic Fruit Fashion

Lana Del Rey sang about her "fruit punch lips" and Marina and the Diamonds used "Froot" as her aesthetic and central metaphor for an entire album (including its title and lead single). I think they're on to something: Fruit motifs are cheery, summery, and bright. They can also be playful and kitschy, which I'm totally into.

In honour of National Watermelon Day (it's 3rd August! Fun, right?), here are my picks for a fashionable, fruity finish to the summer.

Maxi Dresses For Summer

Until last summer, I had no idea you could be this comfy and this stylish at the same time. I think maxi dresses literally changed my life, y'all.

Maxi dresses are perfect for summer, because:

They have built in air conditioning

They're flirty and feminine, effortlessly.

They can be flowy or fitted, patterned or solid, accessorized or worn boldly solo. Such a versatile piece of clothing.

You can wear them with heels, flats, sneakers or cowboy boots (like I did last summer):

Plus, you can throw on a dress and go! None of that top plus bottoms nonsense!

Have I sold you on this idea yet? Check out these cute dresses:

I love the shade of blue and the interesting cut of this SWAK dress (CAD $129.90). |  I can't even. This dress is just perfect ($42.50). | How does this dress cost less than CAD $35? It's so cute. | I'm a sucker for good stripes. Like these! ($44.99).

Purchase the dress in the first image here. Also, I'm not affiliated with any of these brands; I just think their clothes are pretty!

12 Ways To Boost Your Confidence

Confidence is one of those beautiful, elusive qualities we all seek but can never seem to attain. It's not surprising, considering the air brushed images we're surrounded by, rape culture we're immersed in, and fatphobia and bigotry being spewed by media, family, friends and doctors alike.

But I'm proof that being confident is possible, no matter your shape, size or dis/ability.

I have multiple chronic illnesses and use a cane to get around. I wear a size 26 (US) and have curves in all the "wrong" places. I have self harm and dermatillomania scars all over my body.

Despite the fact that modern mainstream society sees me as ugly, I know I'm beautiful. I also know there's much more to me than my physical attributes. And I don't care if other people disagree. It's taken me a long time to get to this place, but I really don't care about the naysayers, the fat haters, the bigots who think disabled people are better off neither seen nor heard. I've done a lot of work, between therapy, changing the way I dress, the way I think, the media I consume, and the people I hang out with, and it's paid off.

Here are 12 ways you can become more confident, too:

1. Create a positive environment. Growing up with an abusive father who constantly belittled me for compulsively picking my skin or for being too heavy, I internalized these ideas and they became negative self-talk. For years, I berated myself for eating too much, not exercising enough, being stupid or being ugly. How could anyone feel good about themselves with an external or internal monologue like that? I've learned to surround myself with people who uplift me and who personify the confident, loving person I want to be.

2. Self care. I know it's become a bit of an irritating buzzword, but self care can't be overlooked. Push yourself to work toward your goals, but know when to rest. Have a hot bath. Set reminders so you never miss a vitamin. Invest in a class you're interested in. Paint your nails. Listen to your favourite song. No matter how small the act of self care, it's worth it. You are worth it.

3. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. When I was about 18 and feeling particularly down on myself, my therapist told me to write a list of 5 things I should be proud of. It took me a good 15 minutes, but I managed. I learned to use my past accomplishments as motivation. If you've got a list of things you've done successfully staring you in the face, no new challenge can knock you down.

4. Perform random acts of kindness. As Audrey Hepburn said, "For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness...". Knowing your beauty is more than skin deep will boost your self esteem.

5. Take selfies. From above, from the side, full body, portrait, from "ugly" angles... Get used to how you look. The more you look at yourself, the more you desensitize yourself to your "flaws". After a while, you might even start to like how you look! (This tactic worked great with my nose, which I actually think is super cute, after years of hating it).

6. Follow body positive and fat positive blogs and Tumblr accounts. Representation matters. Studies show that being exposed to a larger variety of body types, sizes and colours increases our tolerance and appreciation of them. If you're having a hard time finding bodies like yours in the media (which most of us are!), purposely seek those bodies out. Seeing people who look like you will make you feel better.

7. Wear makeup... or don't. Do you feel good wearing a full face of makeup? Would you rather be bare-faced? Is a swipe of lipstick or a little mascara all you need? Prefer blue lipstick to vampy red, or natural makeup to bold looks? Forget your mom's or your boyfriend's or Allure's opinion about makeup, and wear what makes you feel like you.

8. Wear clothes that make you feel good. Try on every item of clothing you have, and make sure it fits comfortably. If you have to tug at it so it sits right, or if it's so oversized that you feel unattractive with it on, donate it.

9. Act as if. There's a reason "fake it 'til you make it" is such an ubiquitous saying: there's truth to it. Stand tall. Speak as though you know everyone is hanging onto your every word. And soon enough, they will.

10. Practice "Power Posing". Did you know changing your body language changes your body chemistry, thereby changing the way you interact with others and how they perceive you? As Professor Amy Cuddy explains in her TED Talk, this takes faking it 'til you make it a step further: fake it 'til you become it.

11. Don't read "health magazines". They aren't really about health, or they'd feature people of every size, and talk about ways to feel good about yourself, not how to make your stomach look flatter. Tl/dr: So-called health mags are bullshit.

12. Stop thinking of your body as something that needs work. Your body is beautiful and miraculous and resilient and perfect just the way it is.

Learning to be confident in who you are and how you look is a process, and no one is confident every moment of every day. But: Cultivate good habits, wear things that make you feel gorgeous, and hang out with the right people, and you'll be well on your way to loving yourself. And that's what matters.

5 Must-Wear Spring Trends

Spring 2016 Style

Spring is finally here! And with warm weather, come fabulous warm weather trends. Check these out:

1. Crop tops are super popular again this year, and I couldn't be happier. Wearing a crop top, you can be totally on trend, flaunt your figure and (learn to) love your tummy. Win-win-win!

2. Shiny, futuristic and totally eye-catching, metallic shoes are in right now. From rhinestones and other small sparkly accents to all-out glam gold or silver, you're sure to find the pair for you.

3. Enamel pins are awesome: they're fun to collect, they look cool pinned to a dress or bag or jacket, and they're an affordable way to spice things up. What's not to love? Here are some especially fab pins.

4. Black lipstick is BIG this year. Not just for goth kids any more, it's being worn by every one from high fashion models to the girl next door. CoverGirl is even releasing their own version with Katy Perry, called "Perry Panther". I'm coveting Jeffree Star's "Weirdo" (currently sold out- boo!).

5. I talked about ruffles back in March, and have seen so many people rocking them since! (I'd like to think that was my doing ;). The timeless, feminine look of ruffles translates perfectly from summer to spring.

What are you most excited to wear this spring? (Click here for info on the items above).

Top 15 of 2015

2015 has been a memorable year, so I thought I'd take a cue from Blacksburg Belle and make a list of my favourite 15 things from 2015.

1. Travel. I was fortunate enough to visit Columbus, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Central Florida this year. I'm crossing my fingers that 2016 will include further travels.

2. Launching our first project at The Selectively Silent Child.

3. #hospitalglam. "Taking the shame out of being in treatment one selfie at a time". Check out a couple of my selfies here and here.

4. This bathing suit bottom. I foresee the fatkini movement living on well past 2015. (Psst. It's still available on Torrid's website).

5. Amazing food. Gingerbread from Richmond's Kosher Bakery (Toronto), hotdogs and chili cheese fries from Tony Packo's (Toledo), homemade matzoh brei, for example.

A photo posted by Rebecca Esther (@rebeccaesther) on

6. Crop tops. More specifically, seeing a huge variety of women rocking the style that used to be for white girls with perfect abs. This is my favourite.

8. My cane. I definitely couldn't have travelled, worked or enjoyed 2015 nearly as much as I did without my cane. No one wants to need a mobility device, especially in their early 20s, but if you need one, I say this: Use it. And make it pretty. It's so worth it.

9. Starting Project Zero.

10. Revival by Selena Gomez. It's a great album. And I like the conversation it started.

11. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. Oh my god. The change in my skin really is "dramatically different". Another skincare life saver (especially when I'm in Florida) is Evian Mineral Water Spray. It makes your skin feel cool and refreshed without messing up your makeup. Amazing.

12. Maple syrup scented candles.

13. Comparing my "double life" as a spoonie to Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus. It still makes me giggle.

14. Kacey. Musgraves. I love her music and everything she stands for.

15. Avocados.

Fall Fatshion Bucket List

With numerous new trends and a plethora of tried and true classics in stores this Autumn, what's a fatshionista to do? Start a Fall Fashion Bucket List, of course! Check out mine below, and let me know what's on yours.

1. Duster cardigans. Last week, while I was blissfully floating in a pool in the Florida sunshine, I looked up and noticed a woman in short shorts and a cozy cardigan that fell below her knee. All I could think was, "damn, that's chic!", followed by "I'll be wearing my duster cardigans 24/7 when I get back to Toronto!". I love that this piece is versatile and can be layered for any season.

2. Lariat necklaces. I've only recently begun to appreciate this style, and I'm glad I'm on the bandwagon now. Lariat necklaces are so elegant!

3. Striped sweaters. The rule stating that "fat girls aren't supposed to wear horizontal stripes" is total bullshit. Accentuate those curves, baby-- and stay cozy at the same time!

4. Loafers. When I was in high school, my mom gifted me a pair of chocolate brown leather loafers. I was amazed by how comfy they were! I dubbed them my "man shoes" (I'm a fan of menswear as fashion-for-any-and-all-genders so I thought that name was hilarious) and wore them 'til they fell apart. So I'm glad loafers will be in stores this Autumn... I'll be picking up a couple pairs!

5. Ankle booties. More from the footwear department... Ankle booties will keep your feet warmer than loafers will, but they can still be dressed up or down and found quite affordably. This pair from Eloquii is on my wishlist.

6. Houndstooth. This classic pattern works on coats, capes and even shoes! I love how College Fashion styled these houndstooth skirts.

Flaunt Your Fabulous Arms!

Flaunt your fabulous arms! I loved this post at More of Me To Love, It really inspired me to continue wearing sleeveless tops, shamelessly, and to recommend that you do the same.

As plus size women, we're expected to cover every inch of our bodies and blend into our environments. We're not 'allowed' to have fun with fashion or to bare our bodies with style and pride

Fuck that!

Sweater (Dress) Weather

As cooler weather approaches, there are a few things I know for sure: Fall foliage will make up 50% of my Instagram feed, salted caramel and pumpkin spice are everywhere, and sweater dresses are in again.

Sweater dresses are the perfect item for the stylish spoonie; they're comfy, often affordable, and easy to wear without effort and without looking frumpy. If you get cold easily, layer it. If you overheat, roll up the sleeves or pick a lighter fabric. Accessorize or don't. Rock colour, patterns or neutrals. It's that simple!

Here are some of my Autumn 2014 sweater dress picks:

Fat Girl Takes On the Mall

Summer is the perfect time to rock a cute crop top or fun short shorts that show off your great legs. I always look forward to this season of barbecues and beach days and (fashionable) fun in the sun.

But this year has started out a little different.

"My shorts don't fit."
"Neither does this pair."
"All my skirts are too small,"

I complained to my mom, tossing item after item out of my closet. That's when I realized it: my endocrinologist had said PCOS can cause continued weight gain, even during treatment. I'm still gaining weight. Fuck!

Don't get me wrong: I love being fat. I love my body. And I consider myself a fat activist. Learning to love myself means accepting myself at any size, whether it's a 2 or a 32. But growing out of your clothes at a rate that feels unhealthy and puts a dent in your (already half-empty) wallet? It's hard to cope.

So off I go to the mall. The biggest mall in the biggest city in Canada. I have limited funds, since my disability means I can't work as much as I'd like to, but I'm sure I'll find something.

Wrong.

With multiple floors and hundreds of stores, you'd think there'd be at least a hundred that carry sizes over 16.

Nope. Not even 10.

Let's count them:
1 Forever 21
2 Reitmans
3 Sears

Three stores. In an entire mall. The scary thing is that I have more luck at the Eaton Centre than I do at other malls in Toronto.

I'm fortunate that I can sometimes fit into a 16 or XXL, the largest straight size available, so stores like Old Navy and the Disney Store are not entirely off limits. Still, who wants to squeeze into t-shirts and cotton dresses, crying "I'm so lucky this blouse is cut big!"? And as a fat woman, I'm already not taken seriously in the office, so do I really want Tinkerbell's face on everything I own?

I'm glad the three fatshion- friendly stores above exist. But... why aren't their plus sizes mixed in with their "normal" clothes? Why is the fabric quality superb in straight sizes and so-so at best, ghastly at worst in plus? Why should fat girls wear low quality clothes that cost more, just because they're bigger? And why are the few stores in Canada that specialize in plus sizes extravagantly priced and rarely in malls?

We're being punished for our size. We're being punished for eating 'too much', for having illnesses like PCOS, for our genetics, for happening to have double chins.

Do I begrudge my slenderer friends their fast fashion, their hundreds of stores, the breeze that shopping is for them? Not at all. I just want my experience to be as good as theirs.

KStew hates heels; The Internet is pissed

Celebrity gossip rags (and now The Internet) are making a fuss about Kristen Stewart's disdain for high heels.

"Anyone who’s seen photos of Kristen Stewart in one of her perpetually occurring thousand-dollar-gown-and-ratty-sneakers getups... may be surprised to learn that the Twilight star works with a professional stylist".

Actually, no. Most actors have stylists. Also, most of us don't spend our days pondering the lives of said actors.

And really, 'getups'? Only tabloid writers and exasperated fathers who say to their teens "you're going out in that?!" say 'getups'.

Besides, every job has uniform requirements and being a celebrity is no different. But it's not like Kristen eschews heels and fancy dresses completely. She makes her appearance, then changes into her sneakers.

"[The stylist's] name is Tara Swennen, and she wishes Stewart would wear heels just as much as the rest of us".

Really? I don't "wish Stewart would wear heels". I like her laid-back, 'real girl' vibe. Not everyone is into wearing party dresses and stilettos. It's cool that she's confident enough to flaunt it.

"Unlike the rest of us, Swennen actually gets paid to try and convince Stewart to wear heels. And most of the time, it still doesn’t work".

Well damn, doesn't that suck? At least it means that tabloid journalist still has a job, right?

Go for 'Baroque'!

This winter, fashion is all about indulging in rich fabrics, like brocade and velvet, that make you look and feel expensive. Wear luxe jewel tones and your most opulent accessories.

Baroque is incredibly en vogue. It was all over the runaways at Alexander McQueen and Dolce and Gabbana, and now it's in magazines like Elle Canada and Marie Claire.

The history: "Baroque is a period in the history of Western arts roughly coinciding with the 17th century. It's also a style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur....an abundant amount of details....and an overall sense of awe." [source]

So how can you incorporate this style into your own look?

How to wear Baroque this season:

Choose a show-stopping dress in your favourite Baroque print and colour and pair it with modern, sky-high heels and pared-down accessories. OR Wear a glamorous 17th century accessory with neutral pants or skirt and a blouse.
