12 Ways To Boost Your Confidence

Confidence is one of those beautiful, elusive qualities we all seek but can never seem to attain. It's not surprising, considering the air brushed images we're surrounded by, rape culture we're immersed in, and fatphobia and bigotry being spewed by media, family, friends and doctors alike.

But I'm proof that being confident is possible, no matter your shape, size or dis/ability.

I have multiple chronic illnesses and use a cane to get around. I wear a size 26 (US) and have curves in all the "wrong" places. I have self harm and dermatillomania scars all over my body.

Despite the fact that modern mainstream society sees me as ugly, I know I'm beautiful. I also know there's much more to me than my physical attributes. And I don't care if other people disagree. It's taken me a long time to get to this place, but I really don't care about the naysayers, the fat haters, the bigots who think disabled people are better off neither seen nor heard. I've done a lot of work, between therapy, changing the way I dress, the way I think, the media I consume, and the people I hang out with, and it's paid off.

Here are 12 ways you can become more confident, too:

1. Create a positive environment. Growing up with an abusive father who constantly belittled me for compulsively picking my skin or for being too heavy, I internalized these ideas and they became negative self-talk. For years, I berated myself for eating too much, not exercising enough, being stupid or being ugly. How could anyone feel good about themselves with an external or internal monologue like that? I've learned to surround myself with people who uplift me and who personify the confident, loving person I want to be.

2. Self care. I know it's become a bit of an irritating buzzword, but self care can't be overlooked. Push yourself to work toward your goals, but know when to rest. Have a hot bath. Set reminders so you never miss a vitamin. Invest in a class you're interested in. Paint your nails. Listen to your favourite song. No matter how small the act of self care, it's worth it. You are worth it.

3. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. When I was about 18 and feeling particularly down on myself, my therapist told me to write a list of 5 things I should be proud of. It took me a good 15 minutes, but I managed. I learned to use my past accomplishments as motivation. If you've got a list of things you've done successfully staring you in the face, no new challenge can knock you down.

4. Perform random acts of kindness. As Audrey Hepburn said, "For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness...". Knowing your beauty is more than skin deep will boost your self esteem.

5. Take selfies. From above, from the side, full body, portrait, from "ugly" angles... Get used to how you look. The more you look at yourself, the more you desensitize yourself to your "flaws". After a while, you might even start to like how you look! (This tactic worked great with my nose, which I actually think is super cute, after years of hating it).

6. Follow body positive and fat positive blogs and Tumblr accounts. Representation matters. Studies show that being exposed to a larger variety of body types, sizes and colours increases our tolerance and appreciation of them. If you're having a hard time finding bodies like yours in the media (which most of us are!), purposely seek those bodies out. Seeing people who look like you will make you feel better.

7. Wear makeup... or don't. Do you feel good wearing a full face of makeup? Would you rather be bare-faced? Is a swipe of lipstick or a little mascara all you need? Prefer blue lipstick to vampy red, or natural makeup to bold looks? Forget your mom's or your boyfriend's or Allure's opinion about makeup, and wear what makes you feel like you.

8. Wear clothes that make you feel good. Try on every item of clothing you have, and make sure it fits comfortably. If you have to tug at it so it sits right, or if it's so oversized that you feel unattractive with it on, donate it.

9. Act as if. There's a reason "fake it 'til you make it" is such an ubiquitous saying: there's truth to it. Stand tall. Speak as though you know everyone is hanging onto your every word. And soon enough, they will.

10. Practice "Power Posing". Did you know changing your body language changes your body chemistry, thereby changing the way you interact with others and how they perceive you? As Professor Amy Cuddy explains in her TED Talk, this takes faking it 'til you make it a step further: fake it 'til you become it.

11. Don't read "health magazines". They aren't really about health, or they'd feature people of every size, and talk about ways to feel good about yourself, not how to make your stomach look flatter. Tl/dr: So-called health mags are bullshit.

12. Stop thinking of your body as something that needs work. Your body is beautiful and miraculous and resilient and perfect just the way it is.

Learning to be confident in who you are and how you look is a process, and no one is confident every moment of every day. But: Cultivate good habits, wear things that make you feel gorgeous, and hang out with the right people, and you'll be well on your way to loving yourself. And that's what matters.

My Beauty Wishlist -- Spring 2016

Winter is slowly (very slowly, here in Toronto!) turning to spring, and fabulous new makeup products are catching my eye, making me dream of the colourful beauty looks I'm going to rock when it's warm out.

My Beauty Wishlist Spring 2016

Here are my top picks (Click the link above for more information about every product pictured!):

I can't resist a good hot pink, so Anastasia Beverly Hills' Liquid Lipstick in Party Pink has caught my eye. It was actually sold out at my local Sephora, last I checked, and Jeffree Star is a fan of Anastasia products. So they've gotta be good, right?

Speaking of Jeffree Star, have you tried his Velour Lip Scrubs? They come in five flavours, and I've read lots of positive reviews. I'm awfully tempted by the root beer one!

Sephora's Colorful Gloss Balm is moisturizing and is not sticky. And in Peek-a-Blue, it has a fabulous blue tint! I'd love to try other shades, like Adjust Your Tiara.

Tone Correcting or Color Correcting products is really popular lately. I'm new to this technique, so I plan to learn using ELF's Studio Tone Correcting Powder, because I'm on a budget and I prefer powder to liquid products. The pallette is only $4US and it comes in warm and cool tones.

I like fragrances that are portable, so I can reapply once or twice during the day, or spritz some scent on if I forgot to before leaving the house. Buying a rollerball is also a great way to experiment with fragrances, because they cost about $20-35-- far less than a full size bottle of perfume. Prada Candy smells delicious, so it's earned its spot on my wishlist.

I'm not quite a contouring master yet, so I'd love to get Sephora's MicroSmooth Sculpting Trio and some cute heart shaped cosmetic sponges to practice with.

What's on your beauty wishlist?

Winter Nail Polish Picks

Cold weather doesn't mean giving pretty manicures the cold shoulder! Here are some of my favourite colours and styles:

Cobalt - If you like bright but not quite neon, this is the perfect shade for you. Essie makes a gorgeous cobalt polish. A shocking colour like this looks best on short, square or rounded nails.

Berry - Berry lips were en vogue this fall, and the trend continues with nails. Bonus: berry shades are flattering on most skin tones.

Nude - Subtle and pretty, no matter your colouring, nude nails are many women's go-to, and it's easy to see why. This shade looks great on long or short nails.

Jewel Tones - Match your tips to your Baroque-inspired jewel toned accessories. Jewel tones are not only a great way to be on-trend, but you'll look luxe without spending lots of cash. Elle Canada's list of polishes is great.

Crimson - Fiery red is classic, sexy and screams vixen. What's not to love?

Fun, quirky, colourful nail art - Add a little whimsy to your winter with glitter, designs, or even candy cane stripes. Lots more ideas are at my Pinterest Nail Art board.

Go for 'Baroque'!

This winter, fashion is all about indulging in rich fabrics, like brocade and velvet, that make you look and feel expensive. Wear luxe jewel tones and your most opulent accessories.

Baroque is incredibly en vogue. It was all over the runaways at Alexander McQueen and Dolce and Gabbana, and now it's in magazines like Elle Canada and Marie Claire.

The history: "Baroque is a period in the history of Western arts roughly coinciding with the 17th century. It's also a style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur....an abundant amount of details....and an overall sense of awe." [source]

So how can you incorporate this style into your own look?

How to wear Baroque this season:

Choose a show-stopping dress in your favourite Baroque print and colour and pair it with modern, sky-high heels and pared-down accessories. OR Wear a glamorous 17th century accessory with neutral pants or skirt and a blouse.

Product Review: Alison Claire Natural Skincare

My skin gets awfully dry during winter (I think most of us experience that! Ick.). Fortunately, the lovely ladies at Alison Claire were kind enough to send me a couple of their natural skincare products to review for you.

The Lemongrass Foot Cream's texture is absolutely perfect! It feels amazing on sore feet. It's very moisturizing and rejuvenating, and not nearly as greasy as other products I've tried-- score! The only downside: I don't like the scent, (but then I don't like lemongrass in general). The scent isn't that strong, though, so it's not enough to put me off of using the cream again!

I like the Lavender and Chamomile Body Lotion too (though admittedly not as much as the foot cream!). It smells great, is also non-greasy and very pleasant to apply.

Bonus: the minimalist packaging is fresh and pretty.

Alison Claire herself (the company's founder and a natural healthcare practitioner) calls the products "so pure you could eat them"-- and after hearing about the vanilla coconut body butter, I'm pretty tempted!

Final thought: I really like this company:They have lovely products. They have great twitter presence that's friendly and engaging. And their website is easy to navigate (and easy on the eyes), so shopping is made to be a really positive experience. It's definitely worth checking out their site and following them on twitter.

Full disclosure: Alison Claire provided me with product samples in exchange for this honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.

My Fall Beauty Bag

Fall Beauty Bag

Mid-way through this Fall, I've noticed that many of my go-to beauty products have changed with the seasons, while some old standbys have remained in my glittery makeup bag year-round:

-Mascara. I love Julep's mascara. It lengthens beautifully and comes in a cute bottle.

-Lip balm with SPF. Just because there's less sun in Fall doesn't mean your lips don't need protection from UV rays. I like Maybelline's Baby Lips. To moisturize my lips, I prefer EOS in sweet mint.

-Moisturizer with SPF. See above. Plus, my skin feels hydrated and healthy. I usually don't even put foundation on top. I love Yves Rocher's hydrating moisturizer.

-Lip stain. Dark, statement-making lips are en vogue, and I love how a berry lip looks on me. Stain means I don't have to touch it up often, which is great for a busy girl.

-Lip gloss. I use gloss every season! Right now I'm really enjoying Cake's (and you can buy a tube from my store).

-Nail polish: Revlon's polish is fabulous! Lately I've been alternating between "Minted" and "Cherries in the Snow" manicures.

What's in your fall beauty bag? How are you going to update it for winter?

Fall Beauty Wishlist

We've already talked about Fall Beauty Trends to Try, but what about the new (or new to us) products we can't resist? Here are my top 6:

Fall Beauty Wishlist

1 Butter London's Fall Collection looks amazing, but I'm especially gobsmacked about the aptly named Gobsmacked nail polish!

2 Teal is one of my favourite colours, and a perfect way to update the classic smokey eye. After lining your eyes with sultry smudged black or dark brown, add a flick of teal.

3 Show-stopping brows are big this Autumn. Shape (but don't thin) yours with an all in one brow kit for the best results. Wet n Wild's brow kit is the best value I've ever seen, and I intend to buy it again.

4 Rosy cheeks were all over NYFW's runways, so embrace the natural look and swipe on some blush. I'd love to try Nars'.

5 Flawless skin is always in, and BB cream can't seem to stay on drugstore shelves. I'd love to try Maybelline's.

6 A rich red lipstick, like this one from L'Oreal, will bring out the vamp in you.

What Fall beauty products and trends are you most excited to try?

4 Fall Beauty Trends to Try

As summer lazily draws to a close, I'm itching to enjoy Fall's chilly mornings, hot cinnamon lattes and chic cosmetics. When you get a taste of the luscious looks below, I'm sure you'll be excited, too.

1 Rosy Cheeks. Natural shades of pink that make you look like you just walked in from the cool Autumn air are right on-trend. Libby at The Style Dossier has some great tips.

2 Berry or Burgundy Lips. At Marc Jacobs, Shiseido's Dick Page painted models' lips rich shades and left the rest of their faces bare, save for neutral eyeshadow. Page explained, "sometimes what you leave off is just as important as what you put on".

3 Bold Brows.
Elle Canada called them "spring's key feature", and it looks like we still haven't had enough of them. Smooth and sculptured or large and bushy, bigger is better.

4 Smokey Eyes.
As if they ever went out of style! This season, try a glossy eye shadow or turquoise liner.

Which look is your favourite?

How To Wear Neon

Whether you're looking to incorporate a bit of trendiness into your classic beauty look, are keen to dip your toe in the neon pool or want to wear head-to-toe brights, here are some ideas for how to look nifty in neon.

Neon 1

Wear bright lipstick, hot pink blush or a neon manicure to draw attention to your favourite feature.

Neon 3

For a mixture of classy cool and trendy chic, add a bright orange clutch or multi-coloured hair ties to a simple, stunning outfit.

Neon 2

To make a splash, choose one or two brights and plan your outfit around them. Neon green heels, pale green pants and a bright pink and black top? Oh yes!

DIY Manicures Changed My Life

As a kid, I'd bite my nails whenever I was nervous. As I got older, I'd pick at my cuticles during panic attacks, completely unaware of what I was doing until my fingers were bleeding or infected.

But this isn't a post about dermatillomania (though I have been meaning to write one). It's not about bad habits from childhood, either. It's about how changing one little item in my beauty regimen has boosted my self esteem.

After an entirely sucky period in my life, I was left drained and insecure (especially in my appearance). I felt ugly more often than I felt acceptable, and I could probably count the number of days I spent feeling pretty on my hands.

I struggled my way back to self-love and self-confidence, but some days are still a battle. That's why the little things I do to make myself feel happy and beautiful are so important.

I recently began painting my nails; spending hours selecting a shade of polish, painting on coat after coat, covering it in glitter and admiring my handiwork. It's been worth it. This tiny change in how I take care of myself physically (and, I suppose, splurge on nail lacquer from time to time) makes me feel good.

What little something do you treat yourself to for an ego boost?

The Hunger Games, Candy Buttons & Sushi Salad

It's Friday! Happy Link Love day, darlings.

Doesn't sushi salad sound delicious?

I just finished reading The Hunger Games last night (!!!) but I'm already looking forward to the movie. Have you seen the trailer yet? Also, China Glaze's Hunger Games nail polish line looks fab. Related: Some really, really bad pick-up lines.

These candy buttons are nifty! Deciding between eating them and sewing them to a cardigan would be quite difficult, I'm sure.

I'm Not Suffering From Obesity is a great account of how fatphobic culture hurts the fabulously fat.

Come hang out with me on tumblr!

Have a great weekend!

You ARE beautiful NOW!!

Becca, age 14

Sometimes, when I see old pictures of myself, I say "wow, I was so beautiful!" ...with the implication that I'm not beautiful now. And that needs to stop.

We look at ourselves in the mirror & only see flaws. 10 years from now, looking at photos from today, we'll think, I was so pretty/perfect/flawless, why didn't I see it then?!

So let's stop that. Today, look at yourself in the mirror. Look at how stunning you are! Don't wait.

I Stopped Reading "Health" Magazines + You Should Too!

April Flores for Bizarre Magazine

I used to pore over women's health magazines, certain that reading them would inspire me to be healthier. Recently, though, I learned that so-called health magazines aren't so good for us afterall: They perpetuate negative body image ideals and insist that a woman will never be good enough until she's thin, inspiring crash diets and self-loathing.

Now, I do indulge in magazines (what girl doesn't?) but I'm far more discerning than I used to be. In place of reaching for Self or Shape, I explore the Health at Every Size community online or read feminist publications like Bitch and Bust. Better quality material and it makes me feel good about myself. I love fashion magazines too, but take their "health" tips with a grain of salt.

Rather than reading about ways to be skinny, I actively work at being healthy by going for walks, preparing nutritious snacks or practicing yoga.

I recognize that skinny is not necessarily healthy and healthy is not necessarily skinny, just like fat is not necessarily unhealthy and unhealthy is not necessarily fat.

I acknowledge that my body type (voluptuous, full-figured) was highly sought-after throughout history-- a larger figure meant a woman was well-off enough to eat lavishly and her curves were considered beautiful. In the past 60 years or so, slender has been considered most attractive. Society's tastes change in cycles. One day curvy will be in again and thin will be out. We just have to ignore trends and embrace the body we have.

Lastly, I remind myself over and over again that I am beautiful and I deserve to be healthy-- emotionally and physically.

And so do you.

How To: Look Gorgeous Without Makeup

A happily makeup-free Becca, with her love, Kamen.

I first started wearing make-up in junior high. It began with super-girly pink lipsticks and pastel eye shadows, then progressed to Goth-esque red lips and tons of eyeliner. I've definitely toned down my look since then, to the point that instead of 'putting on my face' every morning, I sometimes step away from the cosmetics completely.

The idea of going without oodles of black eyeliner used to petrify me. A lot of girls are afraid to be seen without makeup, and with good reason: we're expected to look perfect at all times-- slender, stretch mark-free, poised and polished, like the pages of a magazine. So can we afford to skimp on makeup?

Absolutely.

Here are some ways to rock the no makeup look.

Take care of your skin. Moisturize daily, exfoliate regularly + be sure to drink lots of water.

Groom those eyebrows. Extensive tweezing or waxing is not required-- simply pluck enough to enhance your brows' natural shape. This will give your face more definition and draw attention to your stunning eyes + cheekbones.

Most important of all: confidence is key! Know that you are beautiful + you do not have to look like a supermodel. In real life, even supermodels don't look like supermodels! Pounds of makeup and tons of photoshop contribute to that flawless look-- a look that's 100% unattainable. Even if it were possible to look that way, would we want to?

Your inner beauty shows outwardly, with or without makeup + a confident smile is more compelling than any computer-generated, idealized image ever will be.
